This update introduces the asylum, where characters who can't cope with the reality forced on them can adopt a new one. It's content I'd originally planned to make soon after 0.1.0, but I pushed it back until I had a better idea of where to take it. It should help round out the trauma system, as reaching very high trauma levels will now unlock more content as planned. The exact mechanics will likely need tuning.
A lot of work has been done under the hood too, which should help expansion in the future.

Patch notes
The colour of hair, eyes and clothes have been adjusted. If you miss any of the old colours let me know, as more will be added in the future.
Thanks to aimozg for many code and image changes that will make adding additional images and colours easier in the future. Relatedly, the hairdresser can now dye your hair white.
Thanks to both Quin2k and aimozg for numerous code improvements.
Awareness can now drop below the starting value. Reaching the new minimum awareness will grant the "innocent" trait, and replace the trauma bar with an innocence bar.
Innocence is reduced by anything that increases awareness, and low control. Running out of innocence will remove the innocent trait, and restore the trauma bar and trauma traits.
Passing out and waking up at the hospital with the "Visibly Disturbed" trait will have you locked up in the asylum.
Accepting their treatments will lower awareness. You will be released if you gain the innocent trait, or your trauma drops low.
There are two other ways to escape. One requires tentacles to be enabled.
Added school status, delinquency and hair length to the cheat menu.
Balance Changes
Increased the duration of pink pills given to you in the pub.
Being hypnotised by Doctor Harper will now decrease awareness.
Some stress and trauma changes outside of combat have been adjusted.

Thanks to Pregmodder and Stuffedgame for the tool used to fix most of the following issues, as well as numerous typos.
Fixed a bug causing NPCs to sometimes be referred to with a male pronoun regardless of their actual gender when pinching your clit.
Successfully mocking should no longer say "+ Control" if you're at the control cap.
Fixed some gender confusion involving Mason.
Fixed a bug preventing the defiant response to Mason untying your bonds from triggering.
Fixed a similar bug blocking the defiant response to being led into the dunes after waking up on the beach.
Fixed a bug preventing the locked door from opening regardless of skulduggery level during the wolf scene beneath the hospital.
Fixed a bug that could prevent penis parasites from being removed during the free treatment.
Fixed a bug causing the hospital to provide male PC's with new underwear whether or not they already had some.
Fixed a bug preventing NPCs from talking about you fucking their ass.
Fixed a bug preventing flashbacks from triggering correctly at school.
Fixed a bug causing you to continue covering your ass a turn after you moved your hand away, and a similar bug causing you to continue working a shaft a turn after you stopped.
Fixed a bug preventing appropriate text from appearing when drugged with an aphrodisiac.
Fixed a bug causing all-boy or all-girl audiences at inappropriate times.
Fixed an issue with the "This action will take your anal virginity." message being tied to your penile virginity rather than anal.

Like that little <- that collapses the info bar in the latest version; or the fact that saves seem to bet sticking around better. I didn't loose my progress between the hotfixes.

In the cheat menu you should add an option to stop something from hunting you or start making something hunt you, cause there have been so many times where I've wanted to explore the forest but I couldn't cause I pass the lack and I start getting hunted so I have to leave the forest then head back in, yet once I pass the lack I start getting hunted again with this repeating a few more times before I just get fed up with it and go back to ignoring the forest.

DeleteMy PC has blonde hair, and while I appreciate the attempt at making it look golden and shinier, all it really looks like is that somebody cracked an egg on top of his head.
ReplyDeleteI actually checked the sidebar to see if my PC was meant to be covered in cum, because the white "shine" really looks like a bunch of splooge on top of his head.
The darker outline of the hair also makes the sprite's head look smaller. And, speaking of outlines, the darkened lines delineating the hair's shape, coupled with
the new blonde color, makes it look like it's made out of bananas. And the darker eyebrows kinda look like bug antennas. Eh.
As for the other hair colors:
The old brown looked cute and natural, the hair shine effect looked neat. The new one is just depressing. I understand why you'd make it darker, but the different hair shine looks particularly bad here, especially when compared to the old one.
The new black looks better, more visible, great change. Still meshes with the background, although I think solving this is more of a matter of enabling other background colors, instead of changing the sprite.
The new ginger looks painful and artificial. The old one was pumpkin spicy cozy goodness.
The new blue looks better, same situation as the new black. Definitely an improvement.
The new green looks better, too. Looks like classic dyed punk material, instead of the radioactive cyberpunk neon hellscape of the old green hair.
The new pink hair is a mixed bag: The lighter pink color looks much better, but the darker delineating lines really don't work that well. The new hair shine doesn't look awful here, though it's still pretty sploogy-looking.
The new purple hair looks worse, overall. A bit too blue, really. Older one looks cuter and more believable.
And the new white color looks neat. Very anime. Now all I need are bright red eyes, then I can unleash edgy hell teleporting behind Bailey.
A couple dimples at the bottom of the PC's left eye were removed, and IMO that's a negative change too, makes the eye less defined.
The secondary color on white clothing is now a light gray instead of a light blue, and I think it's a nice change, makes the details more visible, without going too far.
White underclothing is still kinda hard to see, though.
Talking about hard to see, the school shirt's little tie/ascot thing is invisible in the white version of the school shirt, because it seems to have been made white, instead of the light blue it used to be.
Interestingly enough, some of the school shirt colors still display a light blue tie. Anyway, vrelno pls fx
The new, darker green color looks neat. As does the new purple color, which is easier to see. And the lighter blue, which is more reasonable.
Black and pink are mostly still the same, i.e., black being near-blackhole levels of dark, and pink being more violent and aggressive than any molester.
In fact, black actually got darker in this update. Why? Applying the hair-black's changes to the clothing-black would also result in improvements.
On a mostly unrelated note to this update, I'd like to suggest a change to the sprite of the school skirt. Compared to the sundress or the night gown, it looks awful stiff.
The way the skirt's sides are in a permanent 45° angle reminds me of those 19th century dresses with crinolines. Were gravity to affect the skirt a little more, it'd make a pretty garment.
I'd like to conclude by saying that nearly everything you just read here is a matter of personal taste, and it might be that I'm just dumb and the only one who feels this way, so don't take anything you read here too hard.
Still, I'd really appreciate it if you could consider anything I just rambled about here, and, if reasonable, add the old-style colors back, as an option when going to the hairdressers or the clothing store.

ReplyDeleteI've finally finished consuming most of the new content. I managed to find both way's out of the Psychiatric hospital, and experience the normal hospital's basement events. I have to say; wow. I didn't know I had a thing for gaslighting; but I do now. Thanks for the new fetish unlock. And having Bailey's protesting; or at least not wanting to loose their cash cow; and Robin's reunion upon being discharged was really nice too. I really like having Bailey whenever they do stuff. I didn't even know they can bang on your door when its time for school. Anything that really fleshes them out so they are more of a character and not a game mechanic. I don't need to like her; I just really like that they have more of a presence in game. I still wish that I could pay them in the mornings instead of waiting till the end of the week. I suppose they are the closest thing the game has to a villain. It's certainly an interesting thing to think about. What made Darth Vader cool was not really knowing how he got that way and just imagining what made him a monster and the eventual redemption arc. Or like on the exact other end of speculating with villains. Villains are always more interesting then the heroes or our player character in this case. So it really is interesting to try and think how Bailey got involved with the human trafficking and indentured servitude.
I am honestly impressed about the subtle storytelling as well! The science fair projects, the optional content like breaking into the compound, and the hidden stuff like the basement of the hospital. That got me really thinking about Awareness in general. Does it do anything other then determine how long that you stay at the asylum? I'm pretty sure that there are some things that can only happen more when its higher. There isn't really any way to keep it low or restore it; other then with Pills or Harper events. Because at that point I was already a really broken orphan and felt like I should try and fight for my Awareness after knowing what the world is actually like and being woke.
I mean; I wouldn't mind something like doing kid stuff with robin or reading comic books in my room (I wouldn't mind studying in my room; much like when you study in the mental hospital) would make you a tiny bit innocence; or at least slow the gradual rise into depravity. Maybe something tied too the temple; like attending Sunday service will give you a boost in purity and lower awareness. Even though sooner or later you are going to end up parting in the depravity like the rest of the town. I really liked the way that stuff unraveled in a Stepford Wives way. Having Rapeshire be somewhat normal at the start of the game and each tier of awareness gives you glimpses of what the town is really like.
I really appreciate the way that skullduggery is set up. I mean; it isn't really a clear path on how to level it after things become too easy; but that is sort of part of the fun.
School lockers -> Bus stop lockers(?)--> Houses ---> Mansions ----> Mugging
I'm not really sure where the Beach stuff fits in; only that it really, really helps and isn't really grindable; its a nice time gate. The same can be said about rarer events that give a boost. I don't want to try and get the water fountain event 33 times just to hit a new threshold.
I did have a random thought about what NPC's would fit into what transformations.
Robin: Angel. To pure; must protect.
Whitney: Wolf Girl. Honestly she is really wild and rough.
Player Character: Succubus/Incubus. This seems like the most natural transformation.
Eden: Fallen Angel. I don't know what happened; but it must have broke her.
And now I need to level my swimming and check out the lake and museum stuff.
PS. More Dating sexual servicing. I mean. Hand holding.

Thanks for writing that up, it was an interesting read. I do want to add more awareness-changing actions and events, but I want to keep them rare outside the asylum. Adding some to the temple isn't a bad idea.

I know grinding skulduggery up after the mansions takes a long time. There's more content planned that'll take you right up to S rank eventually.
Body size is currently pretty much a difficulty slider. That may change in the future. There is one rare event where being small or tiny is supposed to be an advantage, but I think it's bugged.

and after finding out Leighton's secret, I went to her office in the morning after walking to school with Robin, and blackmailed her into not giving me detention anymore
However, I still get sent to detention for ALL acts that cause delinquency, as you would normally
Is this a bug or just a feature that hasn't been completed yet?
To clarify, no detention means they will no longer stop you at the gate and try to drag you to it, but you'll still have the option of attending willingly should you want to.

ReplyDeleteThis may be a dumb thing to do for just an erotic game, but I really wanted to praise the work you're doing here. There's a clear commitment at building an experience and not just have a couple buttons to push across some lewd sprite animations.
The minimalist sprite work you have in the game is really cute, effective and does wonders to enhance the experience. Even then, the sprite themselves just end up making better what already is at its core a well-built text game. I love how the text constantly talks to the player as "You" and "This happens to you" or "You decide to do this" because it does matter to whomever enjoys role playing games. Some mainstream games (I'm thinking Pokémon right now) sometimes use phrases like "Player Won the Battle" and that has always taken me out of the experience. Something as simple as using "You" for everything in the game does wonders for immersion, particularly in a text based game.
I found myself not just playing for the lewd segments, but also caring for Robin, fearing each time pay day comes at the orphanage, and just having fun trying to build different stories across different save files. These are all marks of any good RPG, and I think giving those layers of character and customization to the game just make the lewd moments all the more effective.
The amount of creativity with the situations and events during gameplay is also staggering. I’m actually more surprised when something I try turns out not to work, because you seem to have thought of everything, it only makes me wonder what new stuff may come to the game in the future.
The simple point+click text mechanics are simple and efficient during “combat” (let’s call it that ) as well as they are for world exploration. So many other text based RPGs tend to become so confusing with their world navigation and endless menus, where you’ve totally nailed the core mechanics for your game.
I sometimes think of things I’d like to see in future patches of the game (like breast size being visible when topless in your main top left corner sprite) but since I’m not a Patreon (yet!) I feel I can’t really suggest that much, as I’m just someone playing for free.
Again, it may be silly to post this wall of text just for this, but I really wanted to let you know that you’ve truly done a great job with this simple yet surprisingly deep lewd text-based RPG. I’ve been playing it way too much to not come and post this.

DeleteI don't think that it does anything right now; or at least it hasn't in the last few versions. It might just be something leftover from one of the Whitney updates or something that hasn't been implemented yet. Digging around the code does have a lot of robindom references; so one can only hope!

ReplyDeleteIf I'd dare suggest anything for now, it would be the further development of dialogue like this, such as NPCs commenting on your physique, or clothing. Talking about clothing, when you get around to the Clothing Update™, could you add a very tiny speedo, or something else equally skimpy? Ideally, my PC would wear nothing but the bikini bottom at the beach, but that counts as crossdressing, and so he can't leave the changing room, the poor kid. Think of the orphans!

DeleteI've been working on a DoL wiki; but it has been really slow going. Mostly because I have to do play styles and routes that I normally don't do and experience all of the content that I might have missed.
ReplyDeleteI had one bugger of a time trying to get the Mushroom Science Project finished. I didn't want to save scum so I just turned off most of the deep forest content and abused the cheats so I could collect Wolfshrooms without being molested. It just seems like they are too rare; or the tentacle's encounters seems to be set very high. Or both. I honestly don't know if I would have been able to do this science project without cheating; and it seems really hard compared to how easy it is to knock out the other two project. I can practice Swimming and Skullduggery and prepare myself for getting the lichen; I can spend a few sunny days on the beach and measure girl cock. But collecting mushrooms seems to be pure RNG and punishment.
Are the Wolfshrooms able to be picked near the Lake or Eden's Cabin? Otherwise I suggest having the Heartsrooms closer to town and the Wolfshrooms easier to access.

DeleteThanks for the feedback too. The wolfshroom part of the project is too much of a bother for what it gets you really, compared with the other projects. The only trick is making sure your allure is low to maximise the chance of finding them.
You can find them near Eden's cabin, but not the lake. Heartshrooms should already be found close to town.
Now that is interesting; I'm glad that I don't have to go into the super dangerous part of the forest to find them; I might be able to finish the project this way.
DeleteI'm always encountering out new things it seems! Like a lewd exhibition scene during one of the Leighton inspections. I almost always start the game chaste instead of going lewd; and was honestly impressed that the option had turned up for high exhibition characters.
At the moment I have too little content added to it to be worth sharing. I would like to at least flesh it out some before linking it. I don't mind doing it myself; I really wanted something more readable then the pastebin that had been linked ages ago. There is nothing wrong with that; I just wanted more then an FAQ.

In my opinion the Mushroom Project isn't too hard and I usually finish it in only a few days of searching the forest, however I do agree that Wolfshrooms seem very rare as once I finish the project I never find any Wolfshrooms afterward.

DeleteUgh. I can't figure this out. How do you get the Whitney abduction event to start? I tend to play super submissive or slutish characters so this is the first time that I've been resisting her advances and bullying;so this is the first time that I've gotten her dominance to zero. I didn't even do this event with the last Whitney expansion. Does it count if I just resist; and then fail to escape afterwards? Or do I have to keep pummeling and knocking her to the ground?

Personally, I tend to just avoid Whitney as much as possible, but I assume that you have succeed in resisting and fighting Whitney in order to count as that makes the most sense if it isn't happening with your resisting and failing.

I don't know for sure as I tend to avoid Whitney, but my assumption is that you have to resist and succeed in order for the abduction event to occur if you resisted and failed and it wont occur. I might create a throw away character with cheats to make them super buff to fight Whitney with to see if I can get the event to occur that way.

Anyways, so I don't usually do Whitney events as I avoid them most of the time, but considering that resisting and failing hasn't worked for you, I would assume you have to resist and succeed. I'll quickly load up a throw away character and cheat high athletics and stuff to see if I can get it to work by fighting and winning.
DeleteMy best guess that it depends on high lust and zero dominance, rather than if you succeed in resisting or not, as I just tested by very quickly going throw with cheated high athletics to get zero dominance and I haven't gotten the event yet, granted it's only been a few days since I got to zero dominance so it could just have a random chance of happening each day.

ReplyDeleteSuspicion can only make it so easy. A high skulduggery is a good start, or if someone could distract those orderlies you might be able to try other tactics.
DeleteI believe that your skullduggery has an affect on your base attempts of swiping it; and you can get the inmates (when you have high enough status) to cause a distraction if you want to try that route. You could also escape after being put in solitary. That will only help you get out of the mental institution at least.
